Epilepsy Research Recognition Awards Program
The AES is pleased to announce the call for applications for the annual Epilepsy Research Recognition Awards Program. This is a public recognition program designed to encourage and reward clinical and basic science investigators whose research contributes importantly to understanding and conquering epilepsy. Funds for the program have been generously provided to the American Epilepsy Society.
The American Epilepsy Society is one of the oldest neurological professional organizations in the United States. The Society seeks to promote interdisciplinary communication, scientific investigation, and exchange of clinical information about epilepsy. Membership consists of clinicians, scientists investigating basic and clinical aspects of epilepsy, and other professionals interested in seizure disorders.
The Society holds an Annual Meeting which features symposia, lectures, poster presentations, and exhibitions. This meeting offers members a forum for communicating and disseminating current findings in the field of epilepsy. The meeting attracts over 4,000 professionals and offers excellent opportunities for networking and sharing of ideas.
Awards
There will be two awards given in the amount of $10,000 each. These awards will be made to active scientists and clinicians. Our program is available to investigators working in all aspects of epilepsy.
Finances
The awards are intended as prizes, and as such they will be made to individuals for their unrestricted use. Funds are for the exclusive use of the recipients and may not be used for institutional or departmental support. There is no provision for institutional overhead. AES reserves the right to determine the number of awards, based on available funds and other considerations.
Eligibility
Any individual holding a professional degree and whose research impacts on any aspect of epilepsy is eligible for these awards.
- There is no geographic restriction. Nominations from outside the U.S. and North America are welcome.
- Nominations of women and members of minority groups are especially encouraged.
Selection of Awardees
The American Epilepsy Society has the sole responsibility for selection of recipients, based upon recommendations of an Awards Committee appointed by the President and Board of Directors of the Society. Recipients will be selected competitively from each category. No individual may receive more than one award from each category. More than one nomination may be submitted from a single institution. Members of the Awards Committee are ineligible for consideration.
Award Criteria
Applications are evaluated based on the following criteria: 1) Pioneering research, 2) Originality of research, 3) Quality of publications, 4) Research productivity, 5) Relationship of the candidate's work to problems in epilepsy, 5) Training activities, 6) Other contributions in epilepsy, and 7) Productivity over the next decade.

How To Apply
Please submit the candiate package to the American Epilepsy Society. The Cover Form may be reproduced. A single electronic document (Word or PDF) should be compiled with the following documents and sent to the AES Executive Office, ctubby@aesnet.org. The deadline for receipt of candidate pacakges is August 3, 2009.
Awards will be announced at the Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society in Seattle, WA, December 5-9, 2008.
Instructions
A complete proposal consists of the following:
- Cover Form with candiate contact information. Be sure to indicate either basic or clinical category.
- OPTIONAL: One letter of support with commentary on the quality of the candidate's work and the importance of his/her contributions.
- CV, including bibliography. Candidate should ensure that all activities and affiliations are included. Candidate's biography should list consulting relationships, advisory board memberships, or executive positions with institutions other than the candidate's identified institutional affiliation.
- A personal statement of candidate's current research program and accomplishments. Include explanation of research and likely future directions. Please note: This summary should be a descriptive overview, not a research proposal or excerpts from a grant application.
- Reprints of three representative publications
