Impact of Epilepsy on Learning Behavior in School Children

This program is designed for psychologists, pharmacists, nurses and social workers who interact frequently with people with epilepsy.
Program goal
To offer health care professionals
information on the specific learning and attention impairments
frequently experienced by children and adolescents with
epilepsy; elucidate the differences between psycho-educational
and neuropsychological evaluations; address common cognitive
and behavioral side-effects of antiepileptic medications;
and discuss children’s legal rights to specific academic
interventions, including 504 plans and Individualized Education
Plans (IEPs).
Program Objectives
At the conclusion of this program,
participants will be able to:
- Explain the difference between a psychoeducational and a neuropsychological evaluation.
- Describe learning and attention disorders related to epilepsy
- Recognize the learning and behavior problems related to antiepileptic medications
- Identify appropriate educational and treatment interventions.
