Funny Spells: Recognizing and Diagnosing Seizures in the Elderly

Joseph I. Sirvey, M.D., Department of Neurology, Associate Dean, Mayo School of Continuing Medical Education. Dr. Sriven is an epilepsy subspecialty expert who has focused his research on seizures in the older adult. He has authored multiple papers and edited a textbook on the topic. In his presentation he will provide detailed data on seizure frequency in older adults, examples of the myriad ways that seizures can present in this population and an algorithm detailing how seizures should be managed in this population.

Target Audience:
This program is designed for neuroscience and advance practice nurses, school nurses, social workers and others who are involved in the care of persons with epilepsy, who are interested in enhancing their ability to treat and counsel their patients.

Program Goal:
To offer allied health professionals the most up-to-date tools and knowledge so that they can provide the best treatments and education to patients and their families.

Objectives:
Upon completion of this program, it is anticipated that participants will be able to:

  1. Explain the high frequency of seizures in this age group.
  2. Describe the various presentations of seizures in the older adult.
  3. Create a treatment algorithm for treating seizures in the older adult.
