The Committee is comprised of voting members and Ex-Officio members from the Society. Voting members include the President and First Vice President who serve one year terms. The remaining voting members, including the chair, serve three-year terms. Ex-Officio members also include representatives from Epilepsy Foundation and the NIH as well as the AES Treasurer and the chair of the Research Subcommittees. The President is responsible for making the committee selections and assigning a chair.

Basic Function:
Monitoring the funding of epilepsy research in US. Identify unmet needs of basic, clinical and translation research. Advise the Board of Directors and the President on all research related matters including initiation and termination of research grant programs. To develop collaborative relationship with private foundations funding epilepsy research. Develop collaborative relations with NIH and other federal agencies funding epilepsy research.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Reviews and selects Research & Training Workshops to fund in two rounds (spring and fall).
- Reviews and selects Heffer Travel Fund recipients in the fall. [funds used up in 2005]
- Oversees the Research Initiative Fund Subcommittee.
- Oversees the Research Infrastructure Award Subcommittee. [Note administration transferring to EF as of 2006] [December 2006 no longer separate subcommittee, mechanism now handled by Research Initiative Fund subcommittee.]
- Oversees the Early Career Physician Scientist Award Subcommittee.
- Prepares a budget and presents it to the Board annually.
Goals/Strategies:
- Evaluate current AES portfolio and make recommendations for improvement
- Identify hot areas of research
- Further develop and refine RER web database
- Develop a more formal mechanism to maintaining and fostering collaboration
